Why Does More Power Always Leave You Wanting More Power?

Is power an addiction? Is it just me or does it seem as if the more power a vehicle (that you personally own) puts down, the sooner you grow accustomed to it and start wanting more?

I dove a vehicle with 110 hp for eight years and never felt lacking. Got something with 200 hp and after two years I felt it wasn’t cutting it. Whelp I jumped into vehicles with just under 400 hp and thought, “This is way too much for the street!” Six months later I’m thinking that an SRT or R-S model would be about right for puttering around in traffic.

Have any of you noticed that the more power you buy the sooner you were left wanting just a little bit more?

Because when you can’t beat anyone off the lights, you don’t know what it’s like. As soon as you can beat one person, you want to beat more, and as soon as you fail you need more power.

It all comes down to what you can put down. I use a gear based boost controller to cut power in the lower gears to keep my car from blowing the tires off when it gets into boost. Don’t get me wrong, it will still spin the tires, but the difference between 400wtq and 650wtq is huge when it comes to driveability on the street.

Situations where you’re able to use your power, will (almost) always be more fun with more power. When it comes to overall enjoyment however, I prefer lightness over power, but that’s because I prefer corners and darting about over straights and stoplight sprints. And probably also because the pursuit for more power will end in a ditch somewhere.

Is power an addiction?

yes. once you’ve experienced it and are used to it, it’s no longer thrilling, and you want more. about 14 years ago, I was able to drive the (upcoming) 2003 Viper for several weekends. I thought that was the most face-peeling acceleration ever. which meant that a few years ago, when I bought a 2012 Mustang GT, I was like “meh” on its performance.

or like when I got my motorcycle endorsement. when I finally went out on the road, I had a little 250cc cruiser, and I felt like I was flying at 50 mph. Now having done 110+ on my Dyna, street speeds feel like crawling.

this past weekend, I went to Michigan International Speedway for one of the “Richard Petty Driving Experience” Days. I got a ride-along in a Sprint Cup car as a gift. We strapped into the car, and as we entered the track I was like “OK, fine.” but once the driver put us into the banked turn at 160 mph, I was like “holy shit holy shit why are we not sliding into the WALL!”

we get off on accelerations. whether it’s speeding up, slowing down, going around a curve, whatever. it’s the change in velocity our bodies perceive, and it’s what we find exhilarating. But once you’re accustomed to a particular acceleration, the thrill is gone. just look at the drivers for Top Fuel dragsters. they’re in control of a 10,000+ horsepower car which does 0- 300 mph in 3 seconds. and they can do that over, and over, and over again.

I dunno, 200 hp seems like plenty to me.

I experienced power and control in the form of a Lamborghini on a race track. I want that high again. I need that high again.

you need a car with less sound deadening, less comfort, and less life saving nannying(traction control,abs).......... the more death-trap-y the better. suddenly that 400 hp seems way overkill.

As someone with well over 400. No, no I do not. I want and spent money bettering the areas of the car that were lacking.

I’ve never driven a car with more than 320hp, and it’s probably for the best that that remains the case.

There was a time where I was always chasing more power out of cars. Since I’ve started being involved in road racing, power in street cars has become somewhat boring to me. On a track you don’t really need all that power to have tons of fun...all the other components of vehicles become so much more noticeable/important.

05 GTO with twin turbos. Stock block with ported truck heads, big valves, some boost and a LOT of fuel.

Nope I was waaaay off haha. Thinking 335i because it's common to put a boost controller on lower gears once going FBO/ported head.
